How this number works

The running estimate divides official filings by the actual calendar days in 12 months ending September 30, 2026 and applies that pace to the selected UTC period. Counts are shown as whole cases, rounded down. YTD applies the historical pace from January 1; it is not a verified year-to-date court tally. The filing pace freezes at 2027-10-01 unless a newer report is imported. This is not a dollar write-off counter.

Filings are official case counts for 12 months ending September 30, 2026. Districts are combined into states and territories. This is where a case was filed, which can differ from where a business operates or a debtor lives.

Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 are separate filing categories. All chapters also includes Chapters 9, 12 and 15. A filing is not a completed discharge.

State dollar amounts are a separate 2025 measure: liabilities reported by individual nonbusiness filers with complete schedules, from BAPCPA Tables 1A and 1B. They exclude business cases and incomplete schedules. They are not verified losses or debt actually erased.

The published data contain large filer-reported outliers, especially in Florida’s Middle District. We preserve the official amounts with that warning and do not extrapolate these liabilities into a running dollar counter.
