Adds the modeled change to the reported balance. Actual daily changes can go in either direction.

Extend the average net change from 2026-07-24 to 2026-10-22 (90 calendar days) from the latest daily balance. The trend starts at the latest observation on or before 90 days earlier. Midnight UTC is the time convention. Freeze after seven days without a new observation.

A 90-day trend estimate, not a live Treasury balance. Daily borrowing and repayments can move debt in either direction; a negative trend remains negative. Source record date is not an intraday release time.

Sources, methodology & chart data

Debt uses the last published business-day balance in each month. Revenue is the sum of 12 complete months of Treasury receipts. Growth view divides each series by its own first observation and multiplies by 100. The budget view uses monthly receipts and outlays. A deficit is not identical to the change in gross debt: cash balances and other financing also matter.

Revenue uses the latest available report vintage for each month; historical releases may be revised. This chart is a verified snapshot through Sep 2026, retrieved 2026-10-26. Release date is not supplied by these API rows. No intraday market prices or forecasts are implied.

U.S. Treasury Monthly Treasury Statement, Table 9. The underlying 18 Treasury functions plus -$155,018,778,526 in undistributed offsetting receipts reconcile to $7,395,799,983,313 total net outlays. Medicaid replaces the broader Health tile with its CMS federal-share benchmark (Fiscal year 2024), so the displayed tiles are not an additive budget total.

Rates spread reported spending evenly across its reporting period. Actual payments are uneven. Estimates expire 45 days after the reporting period ends. Images illustrate topics and are not documentary evidence of spending.

EXPLORE THE SCALE

What does this pace mean over a minute or an hour?

Estimated federal debt · based on 2026-10-22. This calculates the modeled change in the balance, not the entire balance.

$5,802,221 USD

Calculation: stated rate × selected seconds. This is a scale illustration, not observed activity during that interval, a prediction or a change to the main counter. Actual activity varies; a negative rate represents a decrease.

What changed in the reported observations?

Estimated federal debt

2026-06-02: $39,221,984,586,285 → 2026-10-22: $40,444,342,709,389.

Difference: $1,222,358,123,104 (3.1% relative to the first displayed observation). This compares the first and last observations in this board’s displayed series, not necessarily consecutive periods or the same seasonal window. Check the source vintage and units before interpreting the change.

READING THIS BOARD

Does a higher debt balance mean that much was spent today?

No. Debt is an outstanding balance. Compare two official Treasury observations to measure its change; borrowing, repayments and cash management affect that change.

Make a fair comparison

Compare debt with federal revenue and spending over the same period. A daily debt change is not the annual budget deficit.

How this number works

Extend the average net change from 2026-07-24 to 2026-10-22 (90 calendar days) from the latest daily balance. The trend starts at the latest observation on or before 90 days earlier. Midnight UTC is the time convention. Freeze after seven days without a new observation.

A 90-day trend estimate, not a live Treasury balance. Daily borrowing and repayments can move debt in either direction; a negative trend remains negative. Source record date is not an intraday release time.
