Who holds the debt?
Explore the countries, territories and U.S. investors behind Treasury holdings—and what those holdings could earn at a common interest rate.
Interest model, not a payment ledger. Running figures use official holdings × Treasury’s 3.518% average marketable-debt rate. They do not show actual transfers or divide up the net-interest total above. Country attribution can reflect custody locations, not the ultimate investor.

Sources, dates & interest methodology
Foreign holdings: Treasury TIC Table 5, 2026-08. Publication date not supplied in Table 5. Imported and validated 2026-10-26T16:30:38.772Z. Domestic holdings: Federal Reserve Financial Accounts F3.2.s, 2026:Q2, source last updated 2026-09-11. Imported and validated 2026-10-26T16:30:31.968Z. Rate: Treasury Total Marketable average interest rate, record dated 2026-09-30. Rate imported and validated 2026-10-26T16:35:40.317Z. The API does not supply a publication date. Each holdings source retains its own reporting period. Source figures in billions are converted to dollars.
Annual illustration = holdings × 3.518%. Today, week, month and YTD apply that fixed annual illustration to elapsed UTC seconds divided by the number of seconds in the current calendar year. Week begins Monday. The Reported period view shows holdings, not an interest total. The earliest current cutoff is 2026-12-27. Each holder freezes when its own source window or the rate window expires: 120 days after a foreign reporting month, 180 days after a domestic quarter, and 120 days after the rate record. Refreshing a page does not extend those windows.
The common rate is a benchmark, not a holder-specific coupon or yield. Holdings can be at market value, while Treasury’s rate measures its debt cost. Security mix, discounts, inflation adjustments and payment schedules differ. TIC includes some nonmarketable securities; the domestic table covers marketable securities. The foreign and domestic snapshots have different dates and valuation methods. No combined recipient total is presented.
Budget net interest reflects interest expenses and offsets. It is not a pot that can be assigned to these holders in proportion to their balances. Countries are not necessarily the governments receiving the money. U.S. investors exclude the Federal Reserve to avoid overlap. The 20 named foreign locations and Other foreign holders are separate groups.

What does net interest include?
BEHIND THE NUMBER
Net interest reflects federal interest costs after relevant interest receipts and adjustments. It is a cost of financing debt, not repayment of the debt principal.
- Interest on Treasury securities
- Interest received by trust funds
- Other interest adjustments
These topics describe the full budget category. Available breakdowns on this page cover only the programs and reporting periods identified alongside them.

Spending and debt answer different questions. This page shows spending within one federal budget function. The national debt is the accumulated outstanding balance of federal borrowing, not a sum of these category counters.
Source, calculation & original data
Source: U.S. Treasury, Monthly Treasury Statement, Table 9. Retrieved 2026-10-26. Reported total: $1,051,753,969,311.
Rate = reported amount ÷ 31,536,000 seconds in the reporting period. Estimated ranges apply this historical average to elapsed seconds since midnight today, Monday, the first of the month, or January 1 (UTC). These are modeled totals, not measured weekly, monthly or calendar-year outlays. The reported-period view shows the original published total. Estimates stop 45 days after the reporting period ends. Negative net outlays remain static.
Funds approved by law and actual outlays differ in timing and scope. This page does not claim to show a new congressional appropriation.
