Space debris & environment
Explore the science and stories behind the moving dots.
What is being counted?
A working satellite, an inactive spacecraft and a fragment of debris are different objects. ESA’s environment statistics cover a broader population than the CelesTrak Active group used by this map.
Reporting date: July 31, 2026. These are dated ESA statistics, not a current count of dots on our map.
ESA space environment statisticsWhy debris matters
Objects remain in different orbits for different lengths of time. Collisions and fragmentation can create additional debris. Our public satellite map does not provide collision warnings, cover every fragment or establish whether a spacecraft is currently operating.

Positions are estimates. Source orbit time, last successful check and page changes have different meanings. SatNOGS and NASA links are research resources; this map uses CelesTrak orbital elements.
